This book will teach you grammar better than any other grammar text I have encountered in all my years of teaching. It is very carefully organized and thorough. The author uses interesting, engaging sentences to illustrate each point of grammar and asks the reader to identify the elements of focus in a number of subsequent sentences--that is all. There is very little theoretical explanation and no answer sheet is supplied. The book goes into subtle aspects of English sentence structure in this way and covers lessons rarely taught nowadays. It was originally meant for junior high school children, but now I would recommend it to any TEACHER who really wants to understand traditional grammar theory. The earlier sections covering the basics of (verb, subject, prepositional phrases, etc.) are not beyond the reach of most pre-teen students today, although most of the later chapters might be too intricate for them. I used the book with college-level people and they enjoyed it. Nowadays since youngsters are generally unfamiliar with grammar terms, this book is useful because it minimizes the necessity to remember terms and concentrates on giving readers plenty of practice identifying the various sentence parts in order to really understand them.Product details
